In the Pre-islamic period they were regarded as people of no value by the Superpowers of the time who were the Romans and the Persians. In fact, they were regarded as subjects even though these powers didn’t bother to conquer them.
When Islam came, everything changed.

– Mathematicians used solar and lunar calender to calculate sunrises, fasting times and developed navigational tools
– Al-Idrisi compiled maps of the world – so accurate that the western world used it for 600 years
– Bin Battuta – covered 75,000 miles outdoing Marco Polo
– Abu al-Qasim al-Zahrawi – known as the Father of Modern Surgery
– Ar-Razi – The father of Pediatric Medicine (wrote the first book on pediatrics)
– Inb Sina – became known as the Father of Medicine
– First true hospitals (free patient care, specialised units, residency programs, nurses, assistants)
– Jabir Ibn Haiyan (known as father of chemistry)
– Ibn Al-Haytham (known as father of optics)
– Al-Khwārizmī (father of algebra)
