At different times I have mentioned using a gen-set trailer or electrifying roadways other solutions are replacing batteries (a la Better Place) or making new friends [as already has been done on some remarkably long EV road trips.] The Volt puts the gen-set in the vehicle, fuel cells want to give you a hybrid hydrogen/electric car and then there are even commercial solar cars … all of which are available with existing technology. Cyclists turn the question around and add hybrid electric to their leg power.
Glendawright, thanks for the response. In your situation, a possibility that would work is a series hybrid similar to the Chev Volt. These cars run on an electric drivetrain that is powered by a petrol engine. There are elements of efficiency and fuel economy to be gained. Rumor has it that the reason the volt is so expensive is that they are including the price of a replacement battery. The configuration might be accomplished with less expense.
